Key Species: Bicolored Antvireo, Tanager-Finch, White-faced Nunbird, Lanceolated Monklet, Olivaceous Piha, Purplish-mantled Tanager.
Access: 2 hr west of Popayán
Site Description: From mid-morning dense wet fogs shroud the hillside, making birding very difficult. Explore around the cabins and along the road on the Pacific slope of the Western Cordillera for Lanceolated Monklet, Bicolored Antvireo, Olivaceous Piha, Multicolored Tanager and Tanager-Finch. A nature trail opposite the cabin is also productive. Colorful Puffleg is undoubtedly the highlight here, and is most easily found around the hummingbird feeders, where it is a regular visitor. If it is not visiting feeders, it should be searched for along the ridge trails – look for flowering shrubs and vines that attract this beautiful forest hummingbird.

Crested Ant-Tanagers are fairly common, usually found in small groups along streams. The sought-after Munchique Wood-Wren, easy to locate by listening for its’ distinctive song, is also a regular denizen of the damp understory here. Fruiting trees attract three species of fruiteaters, while canopy flocks may include tanagers including Purplish-mantled and Orange-eared Tanagers. The area has a very large bird list; as security improves and birders return the list of reliable specialties will surely increase!
