Site Description:
This site provides some of the easiest access to paramo in the northern Central Andes.
Bearded Helmetcrest is best found at nearly 4000 m, at the Brisas park entrance. This is also a good place to get some hot coffee or tea, as temperatures are always quite low at this site.
Also look for Viridian Metaltail, Tawny Antpitta, Brown-backed Chat-Tyrant, Stout-billed Cinclodes and Glossy Flowerpiercer here.
Lower down, the road passes Laguna Negra, a glacial laguna that is home to Andean Duck, Andean Teal, and sometimes migratory waterbirds. Golden-breasted Puffleg, Sedge Wren, Plain-colored Seedeater, Andean Tit-Spinetail, White-chinned Thistletail and Black-backed Bush-Tanager and others can be found here.
Closer to the main highway, the park entrance road passes through nearly 2 km of elfin forest patches. This is the best place to look for the scarce and difficult to find Rufous-fronted Parakeet. This forest is also home to Rainbow-bearded Thornbill, Andean Pygmy-Owl, White-browed Spinetail, Crowned Chat-Tyrant, Ocellated and Paramo Tapaculo, Golden-crowned Tanager, Scarlet-bellied Mountain-Tanager and Pale-naped Brush-Finch.
