Dusky Starfrontlet + New Antpitta species now easy at Starfrontlet reserve!

Colombian bird tourism continues to improve, and it seems like every month we find a new exciting site or can announce major improvements at key reserves.

We are therefore pleased to report that the ProAves Dusky Starfrontlet reserve is becoming easier and easier for tourists. So easy that the Dusky Starfrontlet itself is now coming to hummingbird feeders at the lodge! Even better, the extraordinary forest guard at the reserve, Luis, has begun an antpitta feeding station five minutes walk from the lodge, where a new antpitta species, only recently discovered and still awaiting a formal scientific description, can easily be seen! Chestnut-naped Antpitta is also regular at this spot. Congratulations to Luis for his hard work and excellent results, and we hope to see you at the Starfrontlet reserve soon!

The Dusky Starfrontlet reserve is accessed via the pleasant town of Urrao, four hours from Medellin or just two hours from Jardin (home to the fabulous endemic Yellow-eared Parrots). It is a two hour horseback journey from the end of the road to the Starfrontlet lodge (simple cabins but very suitable for a two night stay). Furthermore, the endemic Chestnut-bellied Flowerpiercer can be found in the beautiful paramo above the lodge, where Rusty-faced Parrot, White-capped and Red-hooded Tanagers, a plethora of antpittas and tapaculos and many more exciting specialties can be seen.
