Villavicencio is Colombia’s gateway to the 250,000 km² Los Llanos, and is just three hours from Bogota along a direct highway. Villavicencio is ideally positioned for birders to explore the exciting eastern slope forests of the Eastern Cordillera and a patchwork of savannah and gallery forests of the Llanos.
La Florida
This small city park is located near the Bogotá international airport is one of the top birding sites in Bogotá, and an excellent site to search for all the marsh and scrub species endemic to the Bogotá area. This area was formerly a maze of wetlands and lakes; very few have escaped development. The park is easily visited from Bogotá, one of the most modern of South America’s cities.
Chingaza National Park
Chingaza National Park is a large mountainous range featuring montane forest, mountain lakes, and páramo covered with a vast expanse of frailejones (Espeletia uribei), a spectacular and rare plant found in only a handful of páramo sites. There is good access by road (50 km) east of Bogotá. The security situation has been variable, so check with National Park authorities in Bogotá before visiting.
La Vega
La Vega is a small weekend resort town just 90 minutes from Bogotá, which has many interesting birds. Birding is mainly along various trails through shade coffee plantations. One small protected area, Refugía de Laguna del Tabacal, is a quaint lake set in a deep crater surrounded by some forest.
Laguna Pedropalo
This site is easily visited from Bogotá and the woodland around a small lake provides a great introduction to the subtropical birds of the Eastern Cordillera, including two endemics. A permit is necessary to visit from the local municipality office of Tena. |
